Where it comes from. Public record, traceable to the file.

Works of the Indian state

Obtained from the AWS Open Data programme under a CC-BY-4.0 licence, with attribution retained. Every document keeps an identifier built from its source file. The raw archive is retained, and the judgments and passages can be rebuilt from it.

The judgment’s own words

Retrieval runs over the full text, split into passages of a few hundred words. An extract on screen is the judgment’s text at that position, never a paraphrase.

Other courts

Only the Supreme Court and the Calcutta High Court are in the record. A real judgment of any other court is marked outside corpus — unverifiable by us. Further courts are added by demand, one at a time, with the retrieval thresholds re-calibrated each time.

285 Supreme Court judgments (0.74%) are unreadable scans and are not yet in the record.

Short orders

Around 340,000 short Calcutta High Court orders were excluded in favour of the substantive judgments. A ledger of what was left out is planned but does not yet exist.

Official text, section by section

875 Acts and 44,238 sections: 829 central Acts with the Constitution and both generations of the criminal codes, 35 Maharashtra Acts and 10 West Bengal Acts — each read as the law stood on the date that matters. From India Code and the state Law Departments, never from a commercial reproduction and never reconstructed by a model.

1,386 mappings

The old-to-new criminal code concordance, every entry from a Government of India source and none inferred. Where the official tables are silent, the entry stays unmapped.

Every judgment and every statute section a memo cites is checked against the text in our record — the judgment itself, or the Act as in force on your date. A citation that fails is removed or marked, never presented as verified. A State Act we have not loaded (most states other than West Bengal and Maharashtra today) is marked “not in our library”, not “wrong”.
